2015 Cabrinha Switchblade Review

2015 Cabrinha Switchblade Review

The 2015 Cabrinha Switchblade is the latest in a line of fantastic kites produced by Cabrinha. This year, the Switchblade celebrates its 10th anniversary and there is a reason why this model has thrived so long. Its great kite that appeals to all types of rider from freeriders, freestylers to weekend blasters and the 2015 Cabrinha Switchblade is no different.

2015 Cabrinha Switchblade

As always, Cabrinha have come up with an excellent looking kite with sharp, attractive graphics. The 2015 Cabrinha Switchblade I was testing was a 12 metre and was in the red colour scheme. Looks great doesn’t it!

2015 Cabrinha Switchblade

One of the things the Switchblade has been known for is its power. At the low end, it has a lot more grunt than many other kites while having massive depower to cope with the windy days when you don’t have a smaller kite.

I was testing this at Shiu Hau Wan Beach in Hong Kong where the wind tends to be strongest early in the morning and weakens around lunchtime. When I first flew the kite, I needed to use quite a lot of depower but was comfortable once I had found the right amount of power I wanted.  As the wind dropped, I powered up my kite to suit the wind conditions and was easy to do with the Cabrinha bungee depower.

In the air, the turning is smooth, has excellent upwind ability and the kite is stable in the window allowing for easy handling . The turning is also a tiny bit quicker than the 2014 Switchblade but that is just personal opinion. With the kite being so simple to just park and ride, its easy to realise why this kite has had such a wide appeal to all types of kiteboarders.

The boosting is also excellent and very floaty. The kite is easy to jump and gives you good hang time while you are up there.

The relaunch is again very good as it was with all the Switchblade models. While it isn’t the quickest kite out there to relaunch , it still does a very good job.

2015 Cabrinha Overdrive IX bar

The Cabrinha Overdrive IX has had some work done to it from its first incarnation in 2014. The main improvement is the new Quickloop release which now allows for a quick release (of course) and a system that allows you to put the loop back together in seconds. The bar, as was the 2014, is extendable from 48cm to 56cm allowing you to use all the kites of all sizes in the Cabrinha range except the Contra. You can also use the 2015 Overdrive bar with any Cabrinha kite going back to the 2009 range.

To summarise, you can’t really go wrong with a Cabrinha Switchblade and the 2015 model is no different. It is excellent in the air with great power and depower while being a kite that is easy to ride making it appeal to all riders. The improvements to the Overdrive bar make it one of the best in the market and it is a slick piece of kit.

2014 Cabrinha Switchblade Review

2014 Cabrinha Switchblade review

The 2014 Cabrinha Switchblade continues the line of excellent all round kites for all types of rider. The Cabrinha Switchblade has always been known for its versatility and is still the flagship kite in the Cabrinha range.

2014 Cabrinha Switchblade looks great!

My first impression of the 2014 Cabrinha Switchblade is how great it looks. This year’s graphics are eye catching and the kite looks great on the ground and in the air. There are 3 colours to choose from and then there is the Siren colour for the ladies.

Thekiteboardingoutlet_2014_Cabrinha_Switchblade

This year’s kite has just two pulleys on the bridle down from six which allows for less moving parts and therefore less chance of a pulley failing. This also has the effect of a more direct feel of the kite from the control bar.

The kite itself has lots of power especially at the low end. I was out testing this in relatively light winds in Hong Kong’s Shui Hau Wan beach of approximately 10 to 12 knots and I am 70kg. I was travelling along nicely but had to work the kite a bit when the wind dropped a little. I was very happy with the turning speed when compared with the 2013 Switchblade and is one of the improvements on the previous model.

One of the major changes for the 2014 Cabrinha range is the new Overdrive IX control system. Firstly, Cabrinha have introduced the ability to change the bar length between 49 and 57cm on the fly with the overdrive system. By increasing the length of the bar into ‘Overdrive’ mode, it increases the turning speed of the kite. This also allows you to use one bar for the whole range of kites which in previous years was not possible.

The Cabrinha Overdrive IX bar

Another new feature of the control system is ability to choose which side the kite will flag out on. This is done by connecting the ‘flag out’ line to the side of the kite you want to flag out. The Overdrive IX bar also has a lower V from previous years bars for faster turning speeds and a more direct feel.

One downside of the 2014 Overdrive IX control system is that it is not completely backwards compatible with the previous IDS controlled kites due to the lower V split. According to Cabrinha, changing to a low-V on an IDS system has shown that some models flare slightly from the middle of the kite and flatten the arc shape. Some riders may not notice the difference but is worth considering if you want to use the bar with older kites.

I didn’t get a chance to use anything other than a 12m kite as conditions didn’t permit but all in all, I think the 2014 Cabrinha Switchblade follows in the line many excellent predecessors. It is a kite with lots of grunt, easy to fly and can be used for all levels of riding from beginners to advanced. The Switchblade has always been a popular kite and I believe it will continue to be popular with the improvements to the kite and control system.

Olympic hopes raised and then crushed: Kiteboarding scrapped just like that

Remember a few months back when we really excited about kiteboarding being introduced as an Olympic event at the 2016 Rio Olympics?  Well, sadly that dream only lasted a few short months and was dramatically reversed last week at the Annual General Meeting of the International Sailing Federation, crushing the hopes of all professional and aspiring kiteboarders.  Don’t get us wrong, we are happy for all windsurfers out there, who were surely just as dismayed when they were originally scrapped from the Olympics.  All in all, it seems unfair how this situation was handled.

The Kiteboarding Outlet - Kiteboarding excluded from Olympics

Kiteboarding… or did we mean windsurfing?

Apparently what happened was that there were some “language difficulties” when the voting occurred originally back in May 2012.  (Hmmmm… *scratching head*)

This lead to a revote and reversal of the decision at the Nov 9 Annual General Meeting of the International Sailing Federation held in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, where now suddenly 51.3% of the voting body favored windsurfing ahead of kiteboarding as an Olympic event.   In the months between May and Nov the windsurfing community had campaigned heavily to have the decision reversed, a wish that was apparently granted.

Reactions and Future

Of course, all Kiteboarding organizations and professionals have humbly accepted this bad news with optimism for the future. The International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) stated on their website: “We feel with all the kiteboarders out there that hoped to live their Olympic dream already in 2016, but we respect the final decision of the worlds governing body and wish the windsurfers all the best in Rio de Janeiro.  We will continue our journey – promised.”

Kitesurf Tour Europe (KTE) wrote on their website: “Saturday evening in Dublin was an experience. Regarding the decision – so what. We started setting up such a wonderful sport in 2001 and it`s not a problem at all but a corner on our way.”

In our opinion, after this massive blunder, it is unlikely that this will be reversed any time soon.  Imagine the mindf**k:  ISAF says yes, ISAF says no, then ISAF says yes again?  The only possible way it could happen is if they finally brought both kiteboarding and windsurfing to the Olympics.  This also seems highly unlikely considering that it would either come at the expense of another sailing event or that two more event slots would have to be assigned to the sailing category.

But of course we must stay hopeful.  At least the dialogue is there and at least we came close to it once.  The kiteboarding community is growing worldwide and non-kiteboarders also enjoy watching our sport.  Kiteboarding organizations across the globe will continue to champion this cause without backing down.

There is also a grassroots facebook movement called “Get Kiteboarding Into The Olympics” available here, for those of you that want to get involved.

F-One Bandit 6 VI 2013 Preview

F-One Bandit 6 VI 2013 Preview

F-One Bandit 6 VI 2013 Kitesurfing Kite is more stable, less fluttering with greater smoothness, control and less lateral force. All this added to a lighter feeling and a more efficient, direct feel in the bar. Our first goal this year was, as usual, an increase in the wind range even though this aspect was already a strong feature of the F-One Bandit 5 (Contact us at info@thekiteboardingoutlet.com for a clearance discount on the Bandit 5!). A wider range offers two main advantages: a greater riding comfort associated with safety and a smaller number of kites for a complete quiver. We worked specifically on the control in powered and overpowered situations as well as the lateral force produced by the kite in high wind situations. With the F-One Bandit VI 6 2013 in neutral position on the beach you will already feel a better control while sheeting out (pushing the bar out) and more natural stability, which will make you more confident.

As the Olympics came to an end, we also saw the last appearance at the Olympics for the RSX Windsurfing class for now. In anticipation of the change to kiteboarding, most of the RSX competitors have said they would be switching over to kiteboarding to compete in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

As racing becomes more popular due to its inclusion in the Rio 2016 Olympics, there will be more people who will be interested in learning how to ride race boards and master the tactics and techniques of kite racing.
